Skincare dos and don’ts

Skincare is a lot about the products you use and the technique but there are also so many little things that can have a big impact on your skin. These are my skincare do’s and don’ts which you can implement into your routine for the biggest changes.

The Don’ts

Applying product directly on skin                                                                         You get a lot of reels, tiktok and videos of people putting their skincare on by placing the CONTAINER directly onto their face. This may look aesthetically pleasing however it is prone to collect and transfer bacteria. This is due to the fact that it is continually in contact with your skin on a daily basis. Another thing to mention is this wastes so much product, so you are much better off by using your fingers. I personally like to rub the product between both hands as it warms it up and distributes evenly to my face.

Expired
Please and I just cannot say this enough DO NOT USE EXPIRED SKINCARE. Using expired skin care can cause all kinds of trouble for your skin, causing breakouts and irritation to say the least. All products have an expiry date, on most skincare products it will say how many months so for example it may say 6m this means that the product expires 6 months after opening. However due to it not having an exact date it is difficult to remember when you opened the products, Top tip to avoid this is the write the date down of when you opened the product on the product or on you phone.

Too much product                                                                                                Using too little product is clearly a problem as it won’t cover your whole face and you won’t see the full result of what the product can do, but did you know that you can also cause issues using too much product? Using too much of a product does not only waste it but also can actually do the opposite to helping your skin. It can cause redness and breakouts as your skin cant absorb all the product. I like to use around a 10p coin amount of each product apart from eye cream where I use a pea sized amount.

Over exfoliate                                                                                                 Over exfoliation is a common thing to do as your skin feels fresh and clean after exfoliating. However if done too much it can cause all sorts of issues, this is because exfoliation can be harsh on the skin. It is ideal to exfoliate at least once a week unless the product instructions say to do it more or less frequently. You should always follow the manufacturer guidelines as they do know the product best. I am guilty of over-exfoliating myself so I tend to opt for daily defoliators which are gentle on the skin. It is also important to be aware that a product isn’t the only thing that exfoliates your skin. Treatments such as dermaplaning exfoliates so it’s important to be aware of that.

Touch your face                                                                                                    Touching your face throughout the day is normal and I’m sure everyone does this but it is best to try and keep it to a minimum. By touching your face throughout the day you are putting whatever germs which are on your hand onto your face, causing breakouts and irritation. It also isn’t ideal when you’re wearing makeup as it can distort the product.

The Do’s

Wash hands                                                                                                        Making sure you wash your hands before and after you skincare is so important. You need to have a clean hand before touching your face else you will just be spreading the bacteria from whatever you have touched all over your face. Which can then cause breakouts, irritations and infections on your face.

Keeping it clean                                                                                                     If you use anything such as makeup brushes, gua sha or any other applicators, please clean them before every use. This is because the applicators will have bacteria and left over products on them which will again cause skin issues.

Be Gentle                                                                                                               Be gentle with yourself. Your skin is delicate, aggressively rubbing it is not going to benefit you in any way. Try gentle circular upward motions when applying skincare to your face. If you are rubbing and pulling your skin downwards it can cause redness and encourage wrinkles and sagging. Be especially gentle with the eye area as the skin is thinner, I like to use my ring finger and use a patting motion to make sure I don’t damage or drag the skin. I also like to go inward with the product to avoid pulling at the skin.

Follow steps                                                                                                        Having a step by step skin routine will work wonders. The different products used on your skin will need to have a specific order so they can all penetrate your skin and you and receive all the benefits from the products.  This is the order i like to follow:  Cleanse, toner, serums, eye cream, moisturizer/SPF, and a facial oil in the evening.

Not just your face                                                                                               When applying skincare, you don’t just want to apply it to your face, you want to work it all the way down to your neck and chest to really take care of your skin. The skin on your neck is also delicate and so it is important to include that as well. It also ages like the skin on your face so it is great to treat your skin as well as you treat your face.

XOXO
